Kerala Houseboats are a modified version of ‘Kettuvallams’ which were used in the olden days to transport rice and spices across the state. Held together with coir knots, this wooden boat built with natural fibres and adhesives would last generations. A small portion of the kettuvallam was sheltered and served as a restroom and kitchen for the crew.With the passing of decades, newer modes of efficient transport replaced the Kettuvallam. These near-extinct boats were recently revamped to construct beautiful houseboats which fast gained popularity among the tourists. Most houseboats are built using only natural products. The backwaters of Kerala are embellished with these floating beauties.
